When you bring your art or object in for framing, you will be working with me: Gail Johnson. Johnson Framing Studio has evolved over the last 25 years and is a product of my commitment to protect and enhance what you bring to me for framing.

We have thousands of samples of frames, mats, fabrics and decorative touches resulting in endless choices for your project. I will guide you through the process by asking a few simple questions; your answers will inspire a fun and informative experience. See my "Framing" page for more on the process.

My interest in art and architecture has led to an appreciation for the principles of classic design and proportion. For centuries, civilizations and cultures have recognized Fibonacci's sequence, the "Golden Mean", as a naturally occurring mathematical ratio known as phi, or approximately 1/1.666. (When the sequence is plotted and graphed, it creates a spiral.) The Greeks used these proportions to create the Parthenon. It is evident in music in biology, botany, physics - everywhere!

Our studio space was inspired by the Golden Mean and the work of sculptor Richard Serra. Serra creates massive sculptures of undulating steel plates. The spaces created by these forms are meant to be experienced and explored, and I believe that in doing so, one may be personally awed and inspired. Steel has a special resonance, and standing within a steel space seems to have unique qualities. The basis of our interior design is a 14.5 foot high spiral-shaped steel wall that continues, conceptually, into the garden, terminating in a fountain. The design is the result of a collaboration with designer Michael Sagouspe, and a team of talented craftsmen. It reinforces my dedication to offering you an enriching and rewarding experience.

So, I am guided by the principles of universal mathematical ratios and classic proportions, and references to the history of art and framing, but that doesn't mean that your framing will be boring or dated. My goals are to collaborate with you and create a frame design that:
